As I sit by my window with a steaming cup of tea, watching the rain tap against the glass, I’m reminded of how my journey as a writer began. There’s a comfort in routine, in sticking to what you know. But sometimes, stepping out of that cozy corner can lead to the most unexpected and delightful surprises.

One of the things that held me back as a writer was putting myself in a box. “I write fantasy,” I told myself. “That’s my niche, and therefore, that’s all I’m allowed to write from now on.” WRONG! So, so wrong. We are humans with multiple interests, experiences, and knowledge bases. Putting yourself in one niche genre limits you not only as a person but also as a creative.

Imagine baking the same cake over and over again. Sure, it might be delicious, but wouldn’t it be exciting to try a new recipe now and then? Maybe a tart, or some cookies, or even a savory pie? That’s how writing should be. Free yourself from the niche and just enjoy the ideas that come your way. You never know—the idea you had that you thought wouldn’t work out may be the one that surprises you.

Think about it. You might start with a love for fantasy, weaving tales of magic and mythical creatures. But then, a spark of an idea for a mystery novel might light up your imagination. Or perhaps, a historical fiction piece inspired by an old photograph you found in your basement. Allow yourself the freedom to explore these new paths. Each genre you dabble in enriches your skills, broadens your horizons, and makes you a more versatile writer.

Take a moment to cozy up in your favorite writing spot. Let your mind wander through the garden of your experiences and interests. What stories are waiting to bloom? Maybe it’s a heartwarming romance, a thrilling sci-fi adventure, or a poignant memoir. Give yourself permission to explore and experiment.

Remember, creativity knows no bounds. It’s like a warm, inviting kitchen where you can try out different recipes, savor new flavors, and occasionally, make a delightful mess. So, break free from that writing box, and let your creativity soar. The next idea you embrace might just be the one that surprises and delights you the most.
